May Gin Monthly

Wow, what a month! I knew #GinADayMay would keep me busy but I didn’t expect it to be quite that bonkers. And then there were the gin releases, gin events and gin deliveries… Read on if you, like me, need a bit of a reminder of what happened this May.

Looking for a festive cocktail? How about this one featuring The Gael Gin and maple syrup, and served with a delicious dark chocolate biscuit?! . The Ruin 60ml The Gael Gin 10ml Maple syrup 2 dashes of angostura bitters 2 dashes of orange bitters Stir all ingredients with ice, strain onto a large ice cube and garnish with an orange twist and dark chocolate. @thegaelspiritscompany
You probably know @michaelvaughan best as one of England’s greatest cricket captains, but did you know he’s also just released a gin? Vaughan was heavily involved in creating the recipe which features English liquorice root, Australian ginger and Indian Darjeeling tea; representing the three countries he says he had the best time playing in. Produced at @inthewelshwind distillery, @declaration_gin has well and truly bowled me over! I’ve long been a fan of spicy gins so my tasting got off to a great start with warming lifted spices and a hint of citrus on the nose. To taste, one is first greeted with warming ginger which opens into dry juniper before the long finish dominated by the tannic quality of tea. Better yet, this delicious gin is also impressively smooth and very sippable! I’d recommend serving this with a light tonic and an orange and cardamom garnish but I’ll definitely be trying some other combinations. And, in case you were wondering about that second picture, yes; a cricket ball really does live in my fruit bowl - I blame @miller_cricket! Tempted? Thank you @brightonginstergram for these two brilliant bottles! I love everything about them from the vegan wax bottle tops to the gorgeous labels and, of course, the award-winning spirits within. And that gin pin is just the cutest too! I can’t wait to experiment with both gins even more. Any cocktail suggestions anyone?
LEMON MERINGUE PIE GIN! I first met @tom.corner53 at @catfordginfest and, to be honest, as he introduced me to his core range featuring botanicals such as butternut squash, shiitake mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes, it was hard not to conclude he was a little bit bonkers! This, however, is really something else! @cornerfiftythree LMP Gin is the first in his experimental series and sees Tom macerate traditional botanicals alongside lemon curd and roasted almonds before building his favourite dessert - lemon meringue pie - in the column of the still, vapour-infusing the gin through layers of pastry, lemon curd and meringue! To taste, LMP Gin cleverly combines sweet and sharp citrus and, though the juniper is not particularly prominent it does, I think, provide the backbone to the spirit. I figured an experimental gin needed a bit of a fun serve (and I’ve decided gin and biscuits is the future!) so here’s my LMP Gin Sour with Shortbread Crumb to highlight those crazy pastry notes! LMP Gin Sour 50ml Corner 53 LMP Gin 20ml lemon juice 12.5ml sugar syrup 1 egg white 4-5 drops @bitterunion Lemon, Hops & Herbs Shortbread biscuits Crush a couple of shortbread biscuits, rim a glass with sugar syrup, dip in the crushed biscuits and pop in the freezer to chill. Meanwhile, dry shake all the ingredients together before adding ice and shaking again. Strain into your chilled glass and garnish with a slice of lemon or a shortbread biscuit. Or better yet, both!
Well. This is either incredibly kind or incredibly cruel! A beautiful, personalised bottle of Rhubarb & Ginger @edinburghgin that will remain tantalisingly out of reach until 6.30pm on Tuesday 3rd December! Gah! What’s a girl to do? And what do you reckon: kind or cruel?! #FilledWithWonder
There are few brands I can think of with the range, consistency and high standards of Hayman’s Gin so, as Christopher Hayman celebrates 50 years in the industry, I celebrate Hayman’s Gin. Check out my latest article on ginadingding.com and get yourself along to @haymansgin Open Distillery Day on Saturday 30th November, or @fhginclub’s gin tasting with Christopher Hayman at @subplot_57 on Thursday 5th December, to sing their praises too! #TrueEnglishGin
